It's the new year and everyone is reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the year and thinking "New Year, New Me." Being a personal trainer for now over 15 years, I have seen this play out thousands of time over with new gym members joining the gyms by the hundreds every single January and the majority fizzle out within a couple months. I have been lucky enough to see what works and what doesn't to help people achieve and exceed their goals. I'm sharing these tips this year to help others set themselves up for success for not only this new year, but setting and conquering new and larger goals in the future.
Start with Why
First thing to do when thinking about goals is asking yourself "WHY" you are setting this goal and digging deep into this until you get the root cause and motivation to set this goal. This will help you source out the true motive and inspiration of your goal and help you if and when you start to run into road blocks or obstacles along the way to achieve it. Dig deep when asking "why" and identify your purpose, cause or belief. This will help guide your every decision you make and ensure every action you take is aligned with it. Once you have identified your "Why", you can then start to focus on "What" you need to do next and create the roadmap on "How" to get there. This will help you stay dedicated to the cause when you don't always feel motivated. You must become passionate and obsessed with the "why" to produce the "what" and "how" to fuel your desire to reach your goals.
Set Large Goals That Will Inspire You
I was taught to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) Goals which is helpful on many levels and is extremely helpful with creating plans and timelines to achieve them. This alone will not inspire you when you are feeling overwhelmed, tired, not seeing progress, and the list goes on. You have to dream big and visualize yourself accomplishing your goal whether it be getting into the best shape of your life, completing a marathon, starting your own business, or even learning a new language. Set goals large enough that they inspire you to do more and be more and go that extra mile. When working towards your goals or dreams, you should visualize yourself accomplishing your goal. There is amazing power in visualizing your goal and then all the work you will need to do to reach that goal. Make no mistake that every large goal requires more work, but also offers greater reward and satisfaction upon achieving it and will only fuel you to set and achieve larger goals in life.
Don't Be Afraid To Fail
Failure is a part of life. The greatest achievements in life have come after massive repeated failures before success. We learn the most from failure. We grow personally, emotionally, and physically through failure. You must learn to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Do not let the fear of failure handicap you, let it be your fuel to your fire. If your goals don't challenge you, then how will they change you? An example of repeated failure to achieve goals would be when exercising and working out to improve your body or train for a sport or competition. First, you must decide what you are looking to accomplish whether it be improved strength, endurance, muscle mass and/or flexibility. Next, you need to develop a plan on how to get to that goal and committing to how many hours per day/days per week of training you will need. Then comes putting in the time, energy, and work to training your muscles or body until fatigue or failure to produce soreness through sets of repetitions.
We improve, develop and better ourselves through repetitions by figuring out what works and doesn't and adapting to overcome obstacles we encounter whether foreseen and anticipated or not. This is fact that has been proven through humanity's evolution and all the greatest accomplishments!
